The premier, high-success hunting alternative in New Mexico

More About Oryx [Gemsbok]

All our current hunt offerings are on White Sands.  The McGregor hunts are new in 2009.  So no historical data about them exists.  We recommend that non-residents should not apply for the Depredation hunts.  The month long hunts should not be applied for unless you have a contact to hunt on a private ranch that has oryx.

The oryx hunts are similar to antelope hunts in that the animals are on relatively flat ground, you can see them easily from the road, there are lots of roads and most are taken close to the roads.  There the similarity ends!  Unlike antelope, the oryx tend to hang out in brushy areas where only their heads are visible above the brush.  It’s a good idea to bring shooting sticks on an oryx hunt.  The oryx are difficult to kill.  Seriously wounded oryx can travel for miles before bedding down.  They are big and heavy and difficult to load into a vehicle.

There are four types of oryx hunts:

Two day weekend hunts on White Sands Missile Range

Two day weekend hunts on McGregor Army Range

Depredation hunts scheduled on short notice where needed

Month long hunts on lands OUTSIDE of White Sands

Only in recent years has the Missile Range allowed guides to operate for profit.  Prior to that, we guided for expenses only.  Our first hunts were for ourselves and our friends in the early 1980’s.  Later we began taking our clients onto the range.  We’ve guided about 20 off White Sands hunters, but no longer guide off range.  We’ve harvested approximately 60 oryx in total.  All our hunters have had opportunity to shoot.  Only 2 adults and 1 youth hunter failed to harvest.  For selective hunters we have usually been able to harvest an oryx with horns over 35 inches.
