About Our Hunt Offerings ...

Click on any of the targets to get detailed information by species:

We've hunted in New Mexico since 1971 and we've been guiding since 1984 in the same units we offer hunts in today.  Our hunts are all for "free ranging" game not for fenced-in animals.  We hunt primarily on public land in units where hunter numbers and therefore hunter competition are limited by license drawings.  It is very rare that we find another hunter working the same terrain we are working.  Our unique hunting methods and broad experience have provided us a very high kill success on high quality trophies.  We have determined that the use of riding stock is a detriment to hunter success in the specific areas we hunt;  therefore, we use no livestock.  The better you are at walking, the higher your chances are to take a world class animal with us.

We are a small operation with small un-crowded camps.  Details about accommodations we provide on full-service hunts are included under the individual species topics.  We provide as comfortable a camp as conditions allow and provide good quality food served among friendly people.  Dennis and/or Cecil are nearly always present throughout the entire hunt.  Our guides are all mature experienced people who we've known and worked with for years.  We are flexible, we'll strive to tailor the hunt to your needs.

Herd numbers and potential trophy quality are good to EXCELLENT in the hunts we offer.  Most of our clients harvest bigger animals, harvest earlier in the season and see fewer hunters than they expected. Antelope Hunting ...

Although most of the antelope hunts in New Mexico are short, our rifle hunters have had 100% success and our muzzleloader hunters 85%.  Our rifle hunts are in Southern NM in antelope unit 36, and our muzzleloader hunt is in unit 29 (McGregor Range).  The area open to muzzleloaders is not open to rifle hunters, leading to some outstanding trophies. Pictured here is Ed Wood with his 17" buck.
Trailer camps are on BLM lands or on private ranches.  On some hunts, we may choose to stay in nearby motels instead of a trailer.

These are fun hunts!  Usually they are not physically demanding and the weather is warm. For firearms hunts, we use a "spot and stalk" technique from points near roads.  These beautiful, fleet animals have incredible eyesight, so you may have to try several stalks before you are successful.

Elk Hunting ...

On each and every one of our elk hunts all of our rifle and muzzleloader clients, including youth hunters, have had 100% opportunity to shoot for the last 12 years.  We hunt in Southern NM in units 34 and 36, and in the Valle Vidal unit of Northern NM in hunt unit 55. Valle Vidal may be the best public land elk hunting in the US.  We began guiding there in 1987, and each of our clients have had the opportunity to take a 6X6 or better elk.  If you are only interested in a 320+ bull, we recommend Valle Vidal.
The quality of elk in units 34 and 36 is at least as good as the Gila, which is world-renowned. Over half the elk our clients have taken there have been 6X6s.  Pictured above is Bill Taylor with his 360 6/8 (SCI #5) muzzleloader bull from unit 36.

The odds of drawing a youth bull elk hunt at Valle Vidal are much higher than for the concurrent adult hunt. Also, we have discounted this hunt to encourage young hunters, and the parent or guardian comes along free, instead of our usual $500 fee for a non-hunting guest. We expect this hunt to book full early, so if you are interested call us ASAP. Important note: Our experience indicates that most hunters under 12 are not capable enough for these hunts, nor are young hunters without proven shooting ability under field conditions (not off a bench at the range). And for these and all our elk hunts, a .270 class cartridge is the acceptable minimum.

Our hunting methods and camp locations provide tremendous trophy opportunity and are derived from the experience of over 65 elk hunts in our units.  At Valle Vidal and in unit 36 we house you in warm, dry, insect free travel trailers.  In unit 34 we base the hunt at Dennis' private residence, which lies within heavily occupied elk habitat in a remote portion of the unit.  Drop camp type options are available here as well.  We are 100% kill success on the late November cow hunt and we book it for only the first 4 days of the season.  When justified by seasonal conditions we occasionally use overnight spike camps.  Please call us to discuss your options.

Most of our elk hunting is between 7,500 and 10,000 feet, and taking bigger elk normally requires more walking.  On a space available basis the price for a non-hunting companion is $500 for an entire season.

Please call us for the pricing of Valle Vidal hunts. There are very few tags for each hunt, but hunts begin on 4 consecutive Saturdays. Therefore, our pricing can vary considerably depending on three factors: the number of hunters we have during your season; whether we have any hunters in the seasons prior to or following your hunt; and the level of service you desire to receive from us.

Oryx [Gemsbok] Hunting...

Oryx (Gemsbok) were introduced into White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in southern New Mexico in the early seventies.  They are free ranging, pure-bred gemsbok.    Our clients have had 100% opportunity to shoot on every type of hunt.  For the selective hunter, we have usually been able to kill an oryx over 35 inches.
There are three types of hunts: Scheduled lottery hunts on WSMR, depredation hunts on WSMR and on adjacent ranches, and month long hunts on adjacent ranches off WSMR all throughout the year.  We recommend that non-residents apply only for the scheduled lottery hunts.

We offer a wide range of services at reasonable prices for the oryx hunts.  If you drive to the town nearest your hunt area and provide your own food, lodging, and transportation on range, we will provide guide service for your two-day hunt for $750.  Airport pickup, transportation, food and lodging available at additional cost.  The hunt periods we are available are:

ORX-1-114 Stallion Range Aug 16 & 17
ORX-1-100 Rhodes Canyon Aug 23 & 24
ORX-1-116 Stallion Range Nov 15 & 16
ORX-1-106 Rhodes Canyon Jan 31 & Feb 1, 2009
ORX-1-108 Rhodes Canyon Feb 28 & March 1, 2009
ORX-1-122 Stallion Range Mar 21 & 22, 2009

We can also be available to guide the broken horn oryx hunts on the same dates.

We can guide on the off-WSMR hunts. Call us for details.  Remember the early February application deadline.

Persian Ibex Hunting...

Persian Ibex were introduced into the Florida Mountains of southern New Mexico in the early seventies.  They are free ranging, pure-bred ibex.  The Floridas are EXTREMELY rugged, steep terrain.  The present firearms season structure places no more than 20 hunters on the mountain at any one time.  This makes stalking "world class" ibex a good probability because the hunter has more time to make an approach without some other hunter spooking the animal.
Guiding for ibex is where our business began in 1984.  This hunt provides an experience available nowhere else.  Our hunters have taken far more ibex (including nine since December 1st 2007) in New Mexico eligible for entry in the SCI record book than those of all the rest of the currently registered NM outfitters combined.

IMPORTANT: The new SCI Record Book, Edition XI, Vol 3, has significant errors.  Many past entries have been omitted, including seven of the top ten New Mexico ibex as well as entries of many of our other hunters.  These errors are not limited to ibex, so check any entries you have and call Safari Club (520-620-1220) if they are missing.  To view correct New Mexico Persian ibex data current through December 2004, click here.
Only one person may apply on an application.  You will find step by step application instructions at our TopTenIbex.com website.  Our camps are usually in trailers or motor homes near the mountain.  On a space available basis, we will house and feed a non-hunting companion at our standard rate of $500 for the duration of your hunt.  In addition to our full service hunts, we offer pack-in services, spike camps and motel lodging.  For hunters who wish to provide their own food and lodging, motels and restaurants are available in nearby Deming, NM, or you may camp near where we camp.   This is a tough hunt, requiring lots of walking over steep unforgiving mountain slopes.  Horses are nearly useless for hunting this stony terrain.

If you wish to hunt on your own, before the start of your season you could attend our one-day "ibex hunting school" on site in the hunt area. We also provide hiking and ibex viewing trips before and after the hunt seasons. References are available for these services.

Early booking: We offer a 10% discount from the cost your hunt would otherwise be if we receive a signed contract and 50% deposit by September 1.

Over the 25 year history of Kauffman Outfitters we have taken in excess of 125 ibex. For firearms hunters who are good walkers, are patient and have committed to hunt at least 5 days with us we are 100% opportunity to shoot billies with horns longer than 40 inches on each side. (many kill 40-plus billies in 2 to 3 days). Our centerfire kill success is above 97%. Our overall muzzleloader kill success is above 85%. Our muzzleloader kill success for those who brought their own muzzleloading rifles is above 94%.

The 21 year state average kill & recover success (excluding our kills) for bow hunting ibex is below 3%. Our 21 year average is just above 20%. Our January 2008 success was 37.5% with over 85% of our hunters taking shots. If you think you'd like to do the bow hunt we recommend you speak with us on the phone before you apply for the license.

Prices shown below are for full service 5 day hunts. Reduce the price shown by $1,000 if you want only the actual guide service and not the food, lodging and transportation. All ibex hunts are eligible for the 10% early booking discount detailed above. Due to school schedules limiting available time off for young hunters the youth ibex hunt prices are negotiable and service is subject to our availability as well. Be sure to view the many ibex images which are accessed from our home page.

Merriam's Wild Turkey Hunting...

We have gobblers galore in New Mexico!   We hunt in unit 34 near Cloudcroft in the Lincoln National Forest or on adjoining private ranches.  Only shotguns or bows are legal for turkey in NM. We usually book five day hunts during the season, but can accommodate shorter or longer hunts.  Recently, a party of three hunters killed their three turkeys in two days. Historically, we have a 70% success on two-day hunts.
Licenses are unlimited and available across the counter.  For experienced turkey hunters with their own vehicles, we can provide one guide and a fully provisioned 3 day trailer camp for $1800 for your party of up to 4 people.  For parties who want to be self-sufficient, we can provide guide service only for $300 per guide for the first day and $200 per guide for subsequent days ($500 minimum).  Since no other hunts interfere with this one, we can be flexible on what we offer and our pricing.  Call and we'll talk about it.  The price for a non-hunting companion for the fully guided hunt is $200.
